Mocha

El Cerrito, CA

  Breed: Cockapoo

  Weight: 20 lbs

  Age: 2 years old

  Gender: Female

My family consists of husband, my sweet cockapoo, Mocha, and me. Mocha loves people and has a lot of energy at first when you meet her but she’ll calm down quickly after greeting you. She could be shy with other dogs especially bigger ones, but after she knows she’s safe she can be playful. Through careful positive-reinforcement-only training she has no aggression, no resource guarding, and no reactivity. She's crate- and potty-trained. She sheds almost none. We prefer hosting a friendly dog similar size to Mocha, who can play nicely with her. Fixed and low-shedding preferred. We also prefer crate- and potty-trained dogs.

At dog parks he does his own thing for a bit but usually opens up and plays.

Blondie is an energetic pup, but will tire out with a trip to the park. We just rescued him last week. Since we have gotten him, he is pretty good natured. Loves playing with other dogs and toys.

He doesn't love to be home alone but is fine with another dog or in his crate with a chew toy. We go out of town 3-4 times a year where we can't bring him and would love to meet other families to swap care with!

Kealani

El Cerrito, CA

  Breed: White Swiss Shepherd

  Weight: 50 lbs

  Age: 1 year old

  Gender: Female

Hi! I’m Joy and I am beyond blessed that I found my sweet Kealani, “Kea” at Animal Rescue Foundation, and even though it was just 2 1/2 months ago, (August 2023) we immediately bonded. ARF thought she was about a year old when I adopted her but she has me and her vet confused about her age because she still seems to have puppy like fur and the whitest teeth, I could swear she grew a ton, but even though she can become extremely excited, she settles down with maturity. ARF informed me that they rescued her from an overcrowded shelter where her kennel mate severely attacked her leaving a huge gash on her chest but in spite of that Kea is one of those rare dogs that is truly dog social. Like I mean EVERY dog she meets it seems, EVERY time she wants to play, wrestle or have them chase her if they would. And although she’ll try her hardest to tease and tempt, she’s learning that play doesn’t need to be 24/7. She equally loves people who will give her attention and affection and we’re working on not jumping but we still need a little reminder. She just really really wants to give you those kisses! Doggie cuddles and giving out dog treats is my bliss!

Matisse

We are a small family that moved to El Cerrito about a year and a half ago from SF. Scot and Lisa both work mostly from home and little Lucas is our 1 year old son who loves Matisse and all other dogs. We have a small backyard that gets a lot of sun and Matisse gets about 3 walks a day with his middle of the day lunch walk going to a local park to chase his chuckit balls for a bit. He has a big bag full of toys and stuffed animals that he has no problem sharing. He is a big goofball and loves to fetch, play tug of war and chew on any and all balls.

Jack

El Cerrito, CA

  Breed: Mixed Breed

  Weight: 25 lbs

  Age: 9 years old

  Gender: Male

We are here to give back to our community, meet neighbors, and gain some new dog friends for Jack, our senior miniature schnauzer mix. Jack has a lot of energy and loves to play fetch. He prefers male dogs, but warms up to female dogs if the vibe is right. Jack is fully vaccinated and we are only open to hosting vaccinated dogs (must be up-to-date on: rabies, DHPP, bordetella; optional vaccines: canine coronavirus, leptospirosis). I work from home and we walk Jack four times a day. We use only positive reinforcement training at home and we are familiar with handling reactive dogs. Want to set up a doggy play date to meet?

Callie

El Cerrito, CA

  Breed: Goldendoodle

  Weight: 40 lbs

  Age: 3 years old

  Gender: Female

Hello! My name is Mira, and my family and I have Callie. She is a sweet 15 month old, 40lb Goldendoodle. She’s social, enjoys dogs, adults and kids (I have two kids). She can sometimes get overly excited playing with my kids when they are play wrestling or jumping around (they are high energy 5 and 8 year old boys). :) But she responds to calm down. I would say she has a lot of energy and likes to play, but after a morning walk, fetch or dog play, she will hang out and rest. :) Then we will walk, play fetch or go to the dog park in the late afternoon/ evening (and sometimes a midday fetch in the backyard). She does not sleep in a crate, but she is comfortable sleeping or resting anywhere. If needed, she can be left for 6 hours during the day (probably more if necessary, but that’s the most I’ve done). She can also hold her pee for 10 hours overnight. We are happy to host one other kid friendly dog (I’d say up to 50 lbs or so) with minimal shedding (my allergies). :) Callie would be very happy to have a dog friend during the day. My husband or I are usually home working during the day. I look forward to meeting you!

Therefore, Scooter spends lots of time with me and he can’t wait for evening scratches and cuddles with my husband, his favorite person.

Falkor

El Cerrito, CA

  Breed: Soft coated Wheaton

  Weight: 25 lbs

  Age: 7 years old

  Gender: Male

Hi! I’m Laurie, I work in Science Communications in Berkeley and my husband is ceo of a startup. We have two young kids (age 1 and 5) and our furball, Falkor. Falkor is a cuddle monster who would love nothing more than to snuggle in bed all day. He’s very gentle though he is known to steal (or gleefully accept) food from my kids. Don’t let his ‘small’ size fool you though - he can and will reach for things on kitchen counters because he’s surprisingly long! When he’s not counter surfing, he spends his day snoozing. He is on ‘Prozac for dogs’ once a day because he developed a fear of flies that has thankfully subsided with the medication. I work from home 1-2 days a week and the other days he chills at home and goes out with his dog walker on a pack walk once a day. He’s reliably potty trained but may try to mark in new territory.

Penny

El Cerrito, CA

  Breed: Australian Shepherd

  Weight: 30 lbs

  Age: 2 years old

  Gender: Female

Penny is friendly and is a very happy, cuddly girl! She loves to play but can be cautious or shy at first when she doesn't know you. Her breed is active (as a working dog) and she loves to play fetch off leash, play tag and chase. She is goofy, fun-loving and once she trusts you, she is the most loving thing you'll ever meet! Penny can sometimes be defensive (with foreign environments or certain common triggers) and she will bark when scared. This is not typical with other dogs, but can happen for instance with someone skateboarding or when she feels threatened. She has some puppy energy still like jumping up when she wants to give you a "hug" which we are working on. Beyond this, her care routine is pretty straightforward!

Tibor

El Cerrito, CA

  Breed: Mixed Breed

  Weight: 70 lbs

  Age: 3 years old

  Gender: Male

I’m a first-time (as an adult, at least) dog owner, avid movie-goer, and sometimes acroyoga teacher trying to figure out how to handle a timid dog with pretty severe, though thankfully non-destructive, separation/abandonment anxiety. Tibor is a rescue who doesn’t seem to have been socialized and so doesn’t really know “how to dog,” so I’d love to find some calm dogs he can get used to being around and learn from. Also, I work from home and go out evenings (did I mention avid movie-goer), so I’d love to find someone I could trade daytime/nighttime sitting/check-ins/walks with.

Is Dog Boarding Good For Your Dog?

Dog boarding can be an excellent choice for your furry friend, but it's essential to choose the right option. Consider your dog's temperament, socialization needs, and comfort in various environments when making a decision.

Why Dogs Are Happier Staying With A Family Than Dog Boarding

While dog boarding facilities can provide excellent care, some dogs may prefer staying with a family during your absence. Here are some reasons why dogs might be happier in a family setting:

Personal Attention

Dogs are social animals that thrive on companionship and attention. When staying with a family, they receive one-on-one care and affection, which can reduce anxiety and stress.

Familiar Environment

Dogs are creatures of habit, and abrupt changes in their surroundings can be unsettling. Staying in a familiar home environment can help dogs feel more relaxed and secure.

Socialization

Many dogs enjoy the company of other pets and people. In a family setting, they may have the opportunity to interact with family members, including children and other pets.

Routine

Dogs thrive on routine. Families often provide a structured daily schedule that includes feeding times, walks, and playtime, which can make dogs feel more at ease.

Individualized Care

Families can cater to your dog's specific needs, whether it's dietary restrictions, medication, or special accommodations.

Less Stress

Some dogs may become anxious or stressed in a kennel environment with unfamiliar dogs. Staying with a family can reduce the stress associated with boarding.

Finding The Right Dog Boarding Match

When seeking the ideal dog boarding match in El Cerrito, CA, prioritize your dog's unique needs and your preferences as a pet owner. To find the perfect solution:

Consider Your Dog

Think about your dog's temperament, exercise requirements, medical needs, and any special care instructions.

Research Caregivers

Seek recommendations, visit facilities, check references, and conduct interviews to evaluate potential caregivers.

Explore Boarding Options

Choose between traditional kennels, in-home boarding, pet sitters, or a dog boarding community.

Trust Your Instincts

Opt for the option that instills comfort, open communication, and clear emergency plans. Your dog's well-being is the top priority.

Tips For A Smooth Transition: Preparing Your Dog For Boarding

Preparing your dog for boarding is crucial to ensure a smooth transition and a stress-free experience for both you and your pet. Here are some tips to help you get ready:

  1. Early Planning: Start planning well in advance to secure the best boarding option and allow time for preparations.
  2. Updated Vaccinations: Ensure your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations, including rabies, distemper, and Bordetella. Provide records to the boarding facility.

  8. Emergency Contacts: Share emergency contact information with the boarding facility or caregiver in case of unexpected situations.
  9. Positive Farewell: When dropping off your dog, maintain a positive and calm demeanor to ease any separation anxiety.
